French Draft for UNIFIL Missions

Coordination intensified between caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib ahead of his trip to New York to follow up on the renewal of UNIFIL's mandate.

The aim of the trip is to restore the international force's original authority after its mission was amended in a way that allows it to conduct independent operations without prior authorization.

According to Al Akhbar newspaper, there is a political and official consensus to request the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reject a French draft that doesn't reconsider the amendments. On the contrary, the draft specifies that UNIFIL can expand its movements without being obligated to coordinate and cooperate with the Lebanese army contrary to what was stated in previous international resolutions.

The newspaper stated that the draft included provisions that were more concerning than UNIFIL's activities in the southern regions, some of which are related to tensions in the Ghajar area.

The newspaper also mentioned daily meetings being held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for this purpose.
