Dagher: UNSC Resolution 1701 Could Have Been Implemented Without Heavy Losses

Kataeb Secretary-General Serge Dagher expressed hope "that the ceasefire remains in effect and that both sides uphold their commitments. However, this war has demonstrated that Israel emerged as the victor, having achieved its goals: forcing Hezbollah to retreat behind the Litani River, preventing its rearmament, and compelling it to accept a U.S.-led monitoring committee."

In an interview with "Lebanon Files", Dagher stated, "We could have implemented UNSC Resolution 1701 without paying the price of Hezbollah’s agenda. Now, its ministers and media will deceive their base with claims of victory because they cannot admit the absence of deterrence power."

Dagher emphasized that "Netanyahu and Khamenei are criminals who deserve to stand trial for waging wars that harm their people and others."

Commenting on remarks by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, Dagher said: "We are astonished by his claim that Hezbollah, alongside the Lebanese state and foreign countries, will rebuild what was destroyed in the war it ignited. He also called for effective support in electing a president constitutionally. Why then did Hezbollah wage this war and destroy our country if it aims to establish a state, law, and presidency?"

Dagher noted a distinction between Hezbollah’s leadership, its supporters, and the broader Shiite community, stating: "The Shiite community is a fundamental component of the country and deserves to live in prosperity and peace. Its fate should not be tied to a party that anchors its ideology to Iran. Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s supporters are living under the illusion of deterrence power. The real issue lies with Hezbollah's leadership, which does not recognize Lebanon’s borders or sovereignty and considers itself part of a broader 'nation,' not a homeland."

He added, "Hezbollah’s leadership sold illusions, only to collapse and bring down its base and the entire country along with it. It must be held accountable."

Dagher described the war as "a regional conflict between Iran and Israel, fought on Lebanese soil."

He suggested that "Iran might not favor a figure like Hassan Nasrallah leading Hezbollah, an organization it created to remain submissive. Dealing with the current leadership seems more convenient for Iran than with Nasrallah’s leadership."

He further stated, "Iran did not intend to weaken Hezbollah, as it controls the party’s (Hezbollah's) positions and decisions. However, it couldn’t intervene directly in the war, as that would have toppled its regime."

Dagher lamented that "Lebanese citizens alone have paid the price. The residents of the southern suburbs and the South fully understand who has betrayed them and brought them to this point."

He asked, "What will Hezbollah’s leadership tell its base now after this defeat? With its retreat behind the Litani, Hezbollah will officially become a militia. We will not accept a return to the pre-May 7th era."

Dagher pointed out that in the past, "When we opposed Hezbollah, they either invaded Beirut or resorted to assassinations. But now, their excuses for retaining their weapons no longer hold water as they retreat behind the Litani."

Regarding the potential for clashes with Hezbollah after the war, Dagher called for a "moment of awareness among Lebanese people. The streets are divided between those who support Hezbollah and those who oppose it. Supporters have been using social media to threaten opponents with retribution after the war. We advise them not to test us; others tried before and failed. All we seek is to be brothers, to work together to build a state, and to enjoy sovereignty and stability."

Dagher pointed out that Hezbollah initiated a war with Israel on October 8, 2023, in support of Gaza, without consulting the Lebanese people.

He remarked, "Hezbollah promised us deterrence—so where is this deterrence? It claimed there would be shelters—where are they? It assured us that Iran would support it in any war—so where is Iran? Why didn’t it intervene? And where was the protection it vowed to provide Lebanon against Israeli strikes?"

He further highlighted that the statements issued by Hezbollah supporters calling for the elimination of opponents only serve to delight Israel, emphasizing that such rhetoric greatly benefits its agenda.
