Cyprus Braces for Potential Lebanon Evacuations Amid Growing Regional Tensions

Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos warned on Tuesday of "disastrous consequences" if the Middle Eastern conflict spreads to Lebanon, stressing that his country is preparing for all possible scenarios.

"The Republic of Cyprus is preparing for the potential evacuation of third-country nationals from Lebanon," Kombos told the House Foreign Affairs Committee as he highlighted the deteriorating situation in the region.

The Cypriot FM pointed out that the number of evacuees could exceed 100,000, saying that citizens from Lebanon and Israel might need evacuation to or through Cyprus.

Kombos also addressed recent threats made by Hezbollah against Cyprus, refuting claims that his country is involved in the Middle Eastern conflict.

"Cyprus is not assisting Israel’s military operations and will not do so," he clarified, noting that President Nikos Christodoulides has made this stance unequivocally clear.

Moreover, Kombos noted that the Cypriot government is unaware of any aggressive acts originating from British bases on the island and confirmed that the Republic of Cyprus "has not approved such activities." He clarified that British bases, being sovereign UK territory, do not require Cypriot approval for their operations, as demonstrated earlier this year when the UK used its Akrotiri base for bombing missions in Yemen.
