Crystal Palace Defender Reponsible for Darwin Nunez Red Card Threatened, Abused on Social Media

Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen has revealed he received a string of abusive messages on Instagram after the game against Liverpool

Andersen, 26, was largely responsible for Darwin Nunez’s red card in a fiery encounter that ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

He was on the receiving end of a headbutt from Nunez, who retaliated angrily after he was shoved by the Danish defender.

The defender dramatically fell to the ground after contact with Nunez, leaving Paul Tierney with no option but to send off the Liverpool striker.

This now means Nunez will be unavailable for the Manchester United game on Monday, August 22.

In the wake of the incident, Andersen took to Instagram to share some screenshots of the abuse he received from irate fans for his part in Nunez’s dismissal.

“Got maybe 3-400 of these messages last night. I understand you support a team but have some respect and stop acting tough online,” he said on the photo-sharing platform.

“I annoyed him a lot”

Liverpool had to come back from behind once again against Palace after going behind through Wilfired Zaha’s strike late in the first half.

With the Reds down to 10 men, Luis Diaz did brilliantly to get his side back in the game, but Jurgen Klopp’s side could only manage a draw.

After the game, Andersen spoke on his duel with Nunez, admitting he wound up the Liverpool forward consistently prior to the red card.

“The whole game I sat really close to him, I annoyed him a lot and did well against him. I think that’s why he was a little bit angry with me,” Andersen told Viaplay.

Jurgen Klopp on Nunez red card

Klopp also had his say on the red card, with the Liverpool boss admitting Nunez did not need to react the way he did in the game against Crystal Palace.

Speaking after the game, Klopp admitted that the club's record signing deserved to get the red card. The German manager also questioned Nunez's reaction after receiving his marching orders.

Nunez was infuriated with the decision. James Milner was seen urging him to get off the pitch.
