Bou Abboud: Lebanon Trapped in Israel-Iran Conflict, State Must Reclaim Full Control

Kataeb Party Political Bureau member Joelle Bou Abboud voiced strong concerns about the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah, emphasizing that Lebanon is caught in the crossfire of a wider regional struggle.

Speaking in an interview on MTV, Bou Abboud expressed fears that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will pursue the conflict until his objectives are met, potentially delaying a ceasefire until after the U.S. presidential election.

“We’re witnessing a war between Israel and Iran being fought on Lebanese soil,” Bou Abboud said, adding that the path to halting the violence is to reinforce State institutions and commit to a halt of hostilities. She stressed that Lebanese sovereignty could be safeguarded by deploying the Lebanese Army to the southern border to eliminate any further Israeli justifications for military actions.

In her remarks, Bou Abboud also called on Hezbollah to hand over its weapons to the Lebanese Army, a move she said would strengthen the State's authority rather than diminish Hezbollah’s influence.

“It’s disappointing that some view the handover of Hezbollah’s weapons to the Lebanese Army as an act of surrender,” she said.

Bou Abboud questioned Hezbollah's ability to protect Lebanon, citing recent events.

“What we have seen is that Hezbollah has failed to prevent the destruction of Lebanese villages in the south. Israel has returned and caused widespread devastation, showing that Hezbollah’s strategy has not secured the country,” she noted.

Bou Abboud highlighted the need for the Lebanese Army to be adequately armed and empowered to assume full responsibility for national security, which would, in her view, strengthen Lebanon's sovereignty.

“Hezbollah cannot claim that the army is weak while simultaneously undermining the State by acting unilaterally and monopolizing its decision-making power,” Bou Abboud argued.

On Lebanon’s presidential impasse, Bou Abboud called for an immediate ceasefire and the launch of reconstruction efforts, followed by the election of a new president. She also said it was crucial for Lebanon to address underlying issues that have led to repeated cycles of violence and crisis.

“We need to bring our concerns to the table, and Hezbollah must let go of its arrogance,” she stated.

Bou Abboud also warned of Iran's regional ambitions, suggesting that Tehran’s influence extends to using nearby countries for destabilization through proxy forces.

“Iran has expansionist ambitions in the region, and it is using Lebanon, among others, as a battleground through its proxies,” she said.

Concluding her remarks, Bou Abboud held Hezbollah accountable for the ongoing destructive war, asserting that the group had allowed Israel to commit violations on Lebanese soil.

“No one in Lebanon wanted to be dragged into this destructive conflict,” she said, underscoring the broader desire among Lebanese citizens for peace and stability amid a growing humanitarian crisis.
