U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler have introduced a bipartisan resolution in the House of Representatives condemning Hezbollah’s repeated violations of ceasefire agreements and urging the Lebanese government to ensure the group immediately halts its attacks and disarms under the U.S.-brokered ceasefire framework between Israel and Lebanon.
The resolution argues that Hezbollah’s actions serve Iran’s strategic objectives and reflect what it describes as Tehran’s broader commitment to the destruction of U.S. ally Israel. It also stresses that the future of Israeli-Lebanese relations must be determined solely by the two sovereign governments, rejecting what it characterizes as interference by armed non-state actors.
It further aligns itself with the June 3, 2026 joint statement between Israel and Lebanon and pushes back against external influence—particularly from Iran—in shaping Lebanon’s political and security future, a reference that echoes broader concerns raised in connection with the recent U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding.
In a statement accompanying the resolution, Rep. Josh Gottheimer said Hezbollah’s continued operations pose a direct threat to the ceasefire and regional stability.
“Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that takes its orders from Tehran, and its relentless attacks against Israel are a direct threat to the ceasefire, to the region, and to the Lebanese people themselves,” Gottheimer said.
He added that Lebanese citizens reject Iranian influence over their country’s future.
“The Lebanese people have made it crystal clear they do not want to live under the boot of the Iranian regime. This resolution stands with them and demands that Hezbollah put down its weapons and stop acting as Iran’s proxy. Iran does not get to determine Lebanon’s future. The Lebanese people do.”
Rep. Mike Lawler, co-sponsor of the measure, similarly described Hezbollah as a persistent violator of ceasefire arrangements and a destabilizing force in the region.
“Lebanese Hezbollah is a ruthless terrorist organization that has repeatedly violated ceasefire agreements, launching rockets, missiles, and drones at Israeli communities in clear defiance of negotiated terms. The Trump Administration has made it a priority to work alongside Lebanon’s government to ensure they are doing everything in their authority to disarm Hezbollah, and I commend this cooperation. And we should all reject any attempt by Iran or Hezbollah to undermine peace,” Lawler said.
The resolution recalls Hezbollah’s designation as a U.S.-listed foreign terrorist organization and cites its history of attacks against American personnel, including the 1983 Beirut bombing that killed 220 U.S. Marines and 21 other service members.
It also references a series of ceasefire agreements and diplomatic milestones, including understandings reached in 2024 and 2026, while accusing Hezbollah of repeatedly violating those arrangements through rocket, missile, and drone attacks against Israel.
Lawmakers argue that despite commitments attributed to the Lebanese Armed Forces to assert sovereignty in the south, Hezbollah fighters have continued to operate south of the Litani River and maintain military infrastructure in violation of ceasefire terms.
The resolution states that Hezbollah’s activities are directly tied to Iran’s regional strategy and warns against any arrangement that allows external actors to shape Lebanon’s future.
It also reaffirms U.S. support for what it describes as a sovereign, stable, and peaceful Lebanon free from Iranian interference, and underscores Washington’s interest in regional stability and Israel’s security.
The measure calls on the Lebanese government and the Lebanese Armed Forces to fully implement the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, ensure Hezbollah’s disarmament, and remove its military presence and infrastructure from southern Lebanon, particularly the South Litani sector.
It also expresses support for ongoing U.S.-facilitated negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, urging both sides to continue discussions toward a broader agreement.
Finally, the resolution reiterates that any future framework governing Israeli-Lebanese relations must rest exclusively with the two governments.
“The future of the relationship between Israel and Lebanon must be decided by the two sovereign governments,” the resolution states, adding that it rejects efforts by “any state or non-state actor, including Iran or Lebanese Hezbollah,” to override Lebanese sovereignty or popular will.
