Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri expressed his support for the ongoing dialogue between President Joseph Aoun and Hezbollah, while firmly reiterating that the group will not relinquish its weapons until Israel fulfills its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.
"We will not hand over our weapons until the enemy meets the required conditions," Berri stated in an interview with Asas Media. He emphasized that Lebanon's weapons serve as vital leverage in future negotiations.
“Our weapons are our negotiation cards,” Berri continued. “We will not give them up without the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement and progress in discussions about the future of the weapons issue.”
Berri commended President Aoun’s careful and deliberate approach to the disarmament issue, underscoring the importance of maintaining pressure on Israel to meet its obligations under the ceasefire.
“We have fulfilled everything asked of us, and no one can question that,” Berri said. “But Israel has not honored its part of the deal. This responsibility falls directly on the Americans. It also means we should not lay all our cards on the table too soon.”
Berri pointed to two significant commitments Lebanon has fulfilled: the deployment of the Lebanese Army in the south and the withdrawal of Hezbollah from the area south of the Litani River.
“Since then, Hezbollah has not fired a single shot,” Berri remarked, highlighting these actions as proof that Lebanon has upheld its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.
“Israel has failed to respect the ceasefire,” he added. “It must fully implement the ceasefire and withdraw from the occupied Lebanese territories. Instead, Israel has escalated its violations, increasing airstrikes and attacks. I call for at least a halt to these hostilities.”
