Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Rodolf Haykal on Friday issued his Order of the Day marking Lebanon’s 82nd Independence Day, calling soldiers and citizens alike to stand united as the country faces what he described as one of the most dangerous periods in its modern history.

Haykal’s message highlighted the growing strain on Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli military operations, escalating border tensions, and deepening internal instability.

He said the anniversary serves as a reminder of the long struggle waged by generations of Lebanese who “stood united in the face of immense challenges” to secure a sovereign homeland. Despite decades of crises, he noted, the Lebanese “have pushed through time and again” in pursuit of a more stable future.

But today, he warned, the country is enduring “one of the most critical and challenging phases in its history,” with parts of its territory still under Israeli occupation and continued cross-border attacks causing casualties, damaging property, and hindering the Army’s full deployment in the south.

The commander outlined the Army’s efforts since the ceasefire arrangement took effect, saying that despite severe financial strain and limited resources, troops have expanded their presence south of the Litani River in line with government directives and in full adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He stressed the importance of close cooperation with UNIFIL and the Tripartite Committee responsible for monitoring the ceasefire.

Haykal paid tribute to the soldiers who have been killed or wounded “defending every inch of Lebanese soil,” adding that the Army will continue to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to protect sovereignty and support the return of displaced residents to their homes.

Still, he cautioned that the military cannot shoulder the burden alone, calling for deeper support from state institutions, better conditions for service members, and a broader national push to restore stability.

He acknowledged the “exceptional circumstances” surrounding the Army’s mission, saying the months ahead will demand “the highest levels of wisdom, patience, firmness, and professionalism” to protect national interests and safeguard civil peace.

"The Command is fully aware of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the implementation of the Army’s plan, which is progressing according to its established timeline," he assured.

Beyond its southern deployment, Haykal said the Army remains engaged in counterterrorism operations, pursuing fugitives, combating drug trafficking, securing Lebanon’s northern and eastern borders, and working to prevent smuggling in coordination with Syrian authorities. He also pointed to ongoing cooperation with partner nations seeking to strengthen the Army’s capabilities.

Speaking directly to his troops, Haykal urged them to hold fast to Lebanon’s core values and stand firm in their duties despite growing pressures and political noise.

“You are the heartbeat of the nation,” he said. “Your commitment to duty is one of the pillars of Lebanon’s survival.”

He also appealed to the public to continue backing the military, describing it as the country’s “guarantee in times of crisis.” National unity, he stressed, remains essential for Lebanon’s recovery.

“On Independence Day, we renew our faith in Lebanon,” Haykal said. “No challenge can break our resolve, and our country will make it through this moment thanks to the unity of its people and the steadfastness of its Army.”
