Amidst Presidential Vacuum: Quintet Ambassadors Pursue Third Option in Lebanon

The movement of the ambassadors of the "Quintet" to Lebanon is set in the direction of parliamentary blocs in an attempt to find a third candidacy option to end the presidential vacancy.

This initiative follows a meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, scheduled for the day after tomorrow, Tuesday, as requested by the French Ambassador to Lebanon, Hervé Magro.

In this context, the "Asharq Al-Awsat" newspaper indicated that the start of the Quintet ambassadors' tour in visiting parliamentary bloc leaders comes within the context of urging MPs to agree on favoring a third presidential option without endorsing any candidate. This is done to avoid interference in the presidential election, where the decision lies with the MPs.

The newspaper learned that the movement of the Quintet ambassadors comes as part of a renewed push on the presidential file to confirm the readiness of parliamentary blocs to agree on a consensus president who possesses the required qualifications. The Quintet had previously defined these qualifications.

The ambassadors aim to gauge whether there are new approaches to resolving the presidential election deadlock beyond what they conveyed to French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian in their meetings. This would enable the Quintet, in its upcoming meeting at the level of representatives of the five countries, to build on the progress made rather than returning to square one.

The newspaper emphasized that what matters to the Quintet ambassadors in their tour is to inform the parliamentary blocs that there is no room to bet on internal divergence within the Quintet to justify their insistence on options that prolong the presidential vacuum.

It was noted that Qatar is in harmony with the other committee members, as confirmed by its ambassador to Lebanon, Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Faisal Al Thani, during his meeting with the head of the Marada Movement. This information was obtained from a parliamentary source closely related to Suleiman Frangieh.

The newspaper noted that until the Quintet ambassadors conclude their tour in preparation for the upcoming meeting at the level of representatives of the member states, the preference for the third presidential option remains dominant.

Despite Frangieh's determination to participate in the race and showing no readiness to withdraw his candidacy, it implies that the competition will be between him and the Army Commander General Joseph Aoun.
