Early Life and Education
Born on December 15, 1953, in Beirut, Lebanon, Salam boasts an extensive academic background. He holds a Doctorat d'État from the Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris, an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and a Licence en Droit from the Lebanese University in Beirut. Additionally, Salam earned a Doctorate in History from Sorbonne University and a Diplôme from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His educational qualifications reflect a strong foundation in law, history, and international relations.
Career at the International Court of Justice
Judge Nawaf Salam has been a member of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) since February 6, 2018, and assumed the role of President on February 6, 2024. His tenure at the ICJ has further solidified his reputation as a respected jurist, focusing on upholding international law and justice.
Diplomatic Service
Salam’s diplomatic career includes serving as Lebanon’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2007 to 2017. During this time, he represented Lebanon on the United Nations Security Council, presiding over the Council in May 2010 and September 2011. Salam also served as Vice-President of the 67th United Nations General Assembly session, contributing to global discussions on peace and security. His leadership extended to international summits, including the 2015 Paris Climate Change Summit, where he led Lebanon’s delegation.
