Western Powers Warn of ‘Devastating’ Impact of Israeli Ground Offensive, Call for Hezbollah Disarmament

The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, calling for urgent de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the leaders said they were “gravely concerned by the escalating violence in Lebanon” and urged Israeli and Lebanese officials to engage in meaningful negotiations toward “a sustainable political solution.” They added that they “strongly support initiatives to facilitate talks” and called for “immediate de-escalation.”

The five countries condemned Hezbollah’s ongoing attacks on Israel, saying they must come to an end.

“Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel and the targeting of civilians must cease and they must disarm,” the statement said.

The leaders also criticized the group’s decision to align with Iran in the conflict, warning that it “further jeopardises regional peace and security.”

At the same time, they condemned attacks against civilians and essential infrastructure on all sides.

“We condemn attacks directed at civilians, civilian infrastructure, health workers and infrastructure, as well as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon,” the statement said, describing such actions as “unacceptable” and urging all parties to comply with international humanitarian law.

The leaders warned that an expanded Israeli ground operation in Lebanon could have severe consequences.

“A significant Israeli ground offensive would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict. It must be averted,” they said, noting that the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is already “deeply alarming,” particularly in light of ongoing mass displacement.

Reaffirming their position on international efforts to stabilize the region, the five countries called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 by all parties. They also voiced support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah, halt its military activities, and curb ongoing hostilities.

“We stand in solidarity with the Lebanese government and people, who have been unwillingly drawn into conflict,” the statement added.
