Lebanese President Joseph Aoun convened a high-level security meeting on Wednesday to review the country’s security situation as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continue to intensify.

Military and security chiefs briefed Aoun on developments across Lebanon, as Israeli strikes continue to expand from the south to the Bekaa Valley and into Beirut and its southern suburbs. Officials reviewed the human and material toll of the attacks, including casualties, injuries, large-scale displacement, and extensive damage to property.

The discussions also covered the situation along the Lebanese-Syrian border, with participants highlighting ongoing coordination with Syrian authorities aimed at maintaining stability in the area.

The meeting further addressed the status of displaced Syrians in Lebanon, noting that around 100,000 have returned to Syria, with authorities facilitating their departure. Officials also reviewed security measures planned for the upcoming holiday period, particularly around places of worship.

Aoun said Lebanon’s military and security institutions remain on full alert and called for a unified national discourse that emphasizes solidarity and rejects sectarian incitement and division. He urged both traditional media outlets and social media platforms to act responsibly, underscoring their influence during times of crisis.

The president also called on local authorities to fully carry out their duties in coordination with security agencies. He stressed the need to expand shelters for civilians displaced from their towns and villages, while ensuring adequate protection for these facilities.

Aoun emphasized the importance of safeguarding the dignity of all citizens and residents within the framework of the law, and called for tighter monitoring of prices and measures to combat monopolistic practices.

He said the current phase requires close oversight and a heightened sense of national responsibility, urging political actors to rise above personal interests and narrow calculations as the country faces mounting challenges.

The meeting, held at the Baabda Palace, brought together senior political, military, and security officials, including Defense Minister Michel Menassa, Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar, Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal, Internal Security Forces chief Raed Abdallah, General Security chief Hassan Shoukair, State Security Director General Edgar Lawandos and his deputy Morshed al-Hajj Suleiman, Army Intelligence Director Antoine Kahwaji, Information Branch chief Mahmoud Kobrosli, and General Security intelligence head Tony al-Saissa.
