U.S. State Department highlighted the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict across the Blue Line as tensions are still rising between Hezbollah and Israel, underscoring the critical importance of securing a ceasefire in Gaza as a pivotal step towards broader peace agreements in the region.
While refraining from delving into specific diplomatic strategies, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated the United States' commitment to pursuing peace through diplomacy.
"It continues to be our assessment that it’s important to get a ceasefire in Gaza to unlock the possibility of an agreement to that conflict," Miller stated in a news briefing on Tuesday.
He emphasized that achieving a ceasefire in Gaza could pave the way for further negotiations and potential resolutions to the broader conflict.
Miller also addressed recent statements by Hezbollah, in which the group publicly declared that it would cease its attacks on Israel if a ceasefire in Gaza were established.
"We don’t think that they need to wait for that," Miller noted, indicating that the U.S. believes Hezbollah should halt its attacks immediately, independent of the situation in Gaza. However, he acknowledged the potential impact of a Gaza ceasefire on reducing regional hostilities.
"We’ll continue to pursue diplomacy to resolve that conflict, but we really do think a ceasefire in Gaza is important to unlocking a further possibility of achieving it," Miller concluded.
