U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iranian officials to swiftly reach a nuclear agreement with Washington, arguing that Tehran’s failure to finalize a deal had led to Israel’s recent preemptive military strike.
“I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to ‘just do it,’ but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“Two months ago I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to ‘make a deal.’ They should have done it! Today is day 61. I told them what to do, but they just couldn’t get there. Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!” he said.
Trump warned that the recent “death and destruction” could be a prelude to more violence unless Iran agrees to terms soon.
“There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end,” he said. “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire.”
The U.S. president reiterated his long-standing position that Iran should never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. In the same post, he claimed to have warned Tehran about the U.S. military’s capabilities and Israel’s access to American-made weapons.
“The United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR,” Trump wrote, adding that “Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come – And they know how to use it.”
He cautioned that conditions “will only get worse” if Iran does not return to negotiations.
Speaking earlier to Fox News anchor Bret Baier in a phone interview after the Israeli strikes on Tehran, Trump clarified that his administration was aware of the operation but did not participate militarily. *
“Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb, and we are hoping to get back to the negotiating table. We will see,” he said, noting that some members of Iran’s leadership “will not be coming back.”
During another phone interview with ABC News, Trump described Israel’s recent attacks on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure as “excellent” and hinted at further escalation.
“I think it’s been excellent. We gave them a chance and they didn’t take it. They got hit hard, very hard. They got hit about as hard as you’re going to get hit. And there’s more to come. A lot more,” Trump said, according to the outlet.
When asked whether the United States played any role in carrying out the strikes, the former president declined to answer directly. “I don’t want to comment on that,” he told ABC News.
