Threat of Public School Closure

The danger of leaving public schools in Lebanon threatens their continuity. The Ministry of Education aims to merge some public schools to save operational costs and teacher salaries for contract-based educators, as the number of students in some schools has significantly decreased, from 550 to only 100 students last year.

This is not limited to students; a considerable number of teachers are also leaving public schools and the teaching profession. The shortage of foreign literary materials is evident, particularly in secondary schools, especially in the South. The shortage of teachers for correcting official exams has caused delays in publishing results.

Parents are apprehensive, and there is little interest in public schools, even though the prices in private schools have returned to pre-2019 levels. This may lead parents to resort to public schools again. However, this is conditional on constant reassurance that the academic year will pass without strikes. Only then will the numbers in public schools increase.

On another note, some school administrators are optimistic about the step of raising registration fees to LBP 6 million, which will meet the minimum operational budget. However, the challenge remains in being able to withdraw this amount from banks.
