Head of the Kataeb’s Economic and Social Council Jean Tawile said that the events of yesterday’s legislative council do not meet the Lebanese people’s interests.
“We continue to deal with a financial system that does not seek any reforms,” Tawile said in an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio station.
According to him, accountability with regard to financial crimes, tax evasion, and cash smuggling is where the importance of banking secrecy resides.
“We had the chance to implement a string of reforms. Lifting banking secrecy is a key demand of the International Monetary Fund and the International community to fight against corruption and alleviate the burden on Lebanese citizens. However, the law was limited to Speaker Nabih Berri and Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh,” he explained.
“Reforms will then have no impact,” he noted.
Tawile highlighted the fact that IMF was very familiar with the Lebanese situation, saying that it was also keen to follow up on Lebanon’s current updates.
“We will submit our remarks in this regard. The events that occurred yesterday, demonstrate that the authority does not want to deal with the IMF,” he concluded.
