The long-awaited indictment in the Beirut Port explosion case, which occurred on August 4, 2020, is expected to be issued before the tragedy’s fifth anniversary, according to information obtained by MTV.
Sources revealed that Judge Tarek Bitar had initially planned to release a partial indictment at the beginning of 2025, based solely on the files available to him at the time due to repeated obstructions. However, the situation has since evolved, and the decision may now be delayed by a few additional months as new cooperative measures with Bitar have emerged, enabling him to delve deeper into the case and conduct further interrogations.
The latest developments mark a shift from earlier expectations that the judicial process would be hindered by political interference and judicial hurdles. The cooperation now extended to Bitar is seen as a crucial step toward allowing a more comprehensive investigation.
In response to accusations that Bitar’s work has been politicized, a judicial source told MTV that the judge has remained resolute despite facing considerable pressure and threats.
"The investigative judge pressed on despite all the threats. When Hezbollah's Wafik Safa was at the height of his power and threatened him, it didn’t sway him — do you think he’d yield to pressure now?" the source said.
