President Aoun Urges EU Support for Israeli Withdrawal and Resolution 1701 Implementation

President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Wednesday stressed during his meeting this afternoon, at Baabda Palace, with Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon, that “Lebanon looks forward to the European Union countries’ support in demanding the implementation of the terms of the Nov 27 agreement, which stipulates the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Lebanese territories they occupied in the south during the last war."

President Aoun also pointed out that "the clause related to the release of Lebanese detainees held in Israel is part of the agreement, the deadline for which expires on February 18."

Aoun stressed that "the agreement also stipulates respect for Resolution 1701, and Lebanon is committed to implementing this international resolution, and Israel must also respect it."

President Aoun thanked Minister Fajon for "her country’s support to Lebanon in the Security Council during its non-permanent membership, which continues until the end of this year," noting that "the priority after the formation of the Lebanese government will be to rebuild what was destroyed by the Israeli enemy during the last war, in various Lebanese regions, especially in the south,” adding that ‘the support provided by the European Union will be welcomed and appreciated by Lebanon."

Discussions during the meeting reportedly touched on ways to develop the bilateral relations between the two countries, and the current situation in the region in light of the rapid developments it is witnessing, in addition to the common challenges facing the countries of the Middle East and Europe.

On the Slovenian side, the meeting was attended by Slovenian Ambassador to Lebanon Gorazd Renceglj, and the Slovenian accompanying delegation.

On the Lebanese side, the meeting was attended by Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Dr. Abdullah Bou Habib, Director-General of the Presidency of the Republic, Dr. Antoine Choucair, Advisors Jean Murad and Michel de Charadouvian, and Head of the Presidency’s Press Office Rafic Chalala.

Separately, President Aoun received former Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji.
