Pope Leo XIV Welcomed with Full Honors at Baabda Palace

Pope Leo XIV was greeted with a lavish state welcome at Baabda Palace on Sunday, where President Joseph Aoun and First Lady Naamat Aoun received him amid traditional dabke performances and ceremonial showers of rice at the entrance of the presidential residence.

As the Pope approached the palace, a custom laser display illuminated the main façade, projecting his image alongside the iconic Lebanese cedar. The installation also featured symbols of peace, including white doves, as well as the Vatican emblem, highlighting the significance of the visit.

The pontiff later held separate, seven-minute closed-door meetings with President Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Each meeting was followed by a brief encounter with the officials’ families.

Pope Leo XIV signed the Golden Book, the palace’s traditional registry for visiting heads of state and religious dignitaries.

In the Book of Honor at the presidential palace in Lebanon, Pope Leo wrote, “On the first day of my visit to Lebanon, one of two countries that I am visıting on this first Apostolic voyage in my Pontificate, I happily wish many blessings upon all the people of Lebanon, praying that PEACE will reign.”
