The meeting was attended by Kataeb Party Leader MP Samy Gemayel, Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea, and MPs: Fouad Makhzoumi, Ashraf Rifi, Michel Moawad, Waddah Sadek, Michel Doueihy, Mark Daou, Adib Abdel Massih, Nadim Gemayel, Selim Sayegh, and Elias Hankach, along with MPs from the Lebanese Forces: Strida Geagea, Ghassan Hasbani, and George Okais.
MP Fouad Makhzoumi read the statement, noting that the opposition had moved from supporting our presidential candidate Michel Moawad to backing Jihad Azour. However, the opposition’s persistence led to a deadlock in Parliament.
He highlighted that after intensive consultations and international efforts by Lebanon’s friends, the opposition lawmakers concluded that the candidate who enjoys broad consensus is the Army Commander. They thus decided to support him for the presidency.
Makhzoumi stressed that the next president must implement the necessary reforms, including the enforcement of UNSC resolutions 1701 and 1559, among others.
He also called on the Shiite duo to “extend their hand” to build the country through the state rather than through armed factions.
