Opposition Reaffirms Commitment to Constitutional Resolution to End Presidential Void

The opposition lawmakers on Saturday issued a statement responding to Speaker Nabih Berri's call for consultations under the vault of Parliament to pave the way for the election of a new president, reiterating their commitment to finding a constitutional resolution to the ongoing presidential void.

The opposition reminded that it had already proposed a detailed roadmap consisting of two proposals: The first calls for MPs to engage in 48-hour consultations within the Parliament, without officializing or institutionalizing the talks. After this period, MPs would proceed to an open election session with consecutive rounds of voting, without closing the session’s record.

The second proposal calls on Speaker of the Parliament to hold an open election session. After the first round of voting, MPs would have a maximum of 48 hours for consultation, followed by consecutive rounds of voting at a rate of four rounds per day.

"We presented this roadmap to various parliamentary blocs in a series of meetings held at the parliament, with the exception of the Amal and Hezbollah blocs which refused to participate in consultations. Therefore, we ask the Speaker of the Parliament: what consultations are you referring to?" the opposition's statement asked.

Despite the refusal of certain blocs to engage, the opposition MPs reaffirmed their dedication to consulting with all parliamentary blocs and fellow lawmakers under the vault of parliament, stressing that their goal is to end the presidential vacuum through constitutional means and under the framework of the institutions.

"We, as opposition MPs, emphasize the necessity of holding a long-awaited open general session to elect a President of the Republic," the statement read. "The consultation mentioned by the Speaker would take place after the first round of vote. Following that, consecutive rounds would be held, with a constitutional quorum without it being disrupted by any party."
