On the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel paid tribute to the victims of mass atrocities that targeted Armenians and other communities in the early 20th century, calling for remembrance rooted in truth and a collective commitment to dignity.
In a post on X, Gemayel reflected on the massacres that decimated entire populations, urging that memory serve as a force for moral clarity rather than a mere expression of sorrow.
"On April 24, we remember the massacres that struck entire peoples. We do so not to revive pain, but to cleanse memory of the stains of denial," Gemayel wrote. "The Armenian Genocide, the Sayfo massacres, and the Mount Lebanon famine remain a mark of shame on the foreheads of the perpetrators and a source of pride for the resilience of the peoples who endured."
He emphasized that commemorating these events should not be limited to mourning. Instead, he said, it should reaffirm the dignity and perseverance of nations that have endured suffering and survived.
"From memory, we forge ahead," he added. "We remember not to drown in sorrow, but to affirm our dignity and show that nations which have suffered are capable of rising again with their heads held high."
The Armenian Genocide of 1915, which saw the systematic killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, remains a deeply sensitive issue in both regional and international politics. The Sayfo massacres similarly targeted Assyrian and Syriac Christians. During the same period, the Mount Lebanon famine claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands through starvation and disease.
