Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz on Monday ordered the military to carry out strikes against what they described as Hezbollah targets in Beirut's southern suburbs, citing repeated ceasefire violations and a recent escalation in attacks on northern Israel.
In a joint statement, Netanyahu and Katz said they had instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to target what they called "terror infrastructure" in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.
The directive came amid heightened tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border and followed a surge in Hezbollah drone and rocket attacks targeting northern Israel in recent days.
"Due to repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the Hezbollah terror group and the attacks against our cities and citizens, I have instructed the IDF, together with Defense Minister Israel Katz, to strike terror targets in the Dahiyeh quarter of Beirut," Netanyahu said in a statement.
The announcement came after two Israeli soldiers were killed, prompting Israeli leaders to signal a tougher military response.
Israeli officials said the strikes were intended to degrade Hezbollah's operational capabilities, arguing that the group's actions had undermined efforts to preserve the ceasefire and prevent a broader escalation.
