National Conference on 33rd anniversary of the Taif Agreement was held on Saturday at UNESCO upon the invitation of Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Walid Bukhari.
Saudi Ambassador Walid Bukhari considered that National Conference on 33rd anniversary of Taif Agreement reflected the Kingdom’s willingness to preserve Lebanon’s security, stability, and unity, and most importantly the national accord.
"France assured us that there will be no intention or proposal to change the Taif Agreement," he said.
For his part, Former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora stressed the importance of electing a president who believes in the Taif Agreement, and seeks to implement it.
Progressive Socialist Party Leader Walid Joumblatt stated that before discussing the Taif amendment, it shall be implemented.
"The major battle now is not constitutional and political powers of the presidency, but rather the electing a president and later forming a government," he confirmed.
As for Archbishop Boulos Matar said that Christians and Muslims were considered as one in the Taif Agreement.
“We are brothers in patriotism, Arabism, and humanity. Lebanese people shall put aside their differences under the roof of brotherhood, and not above it,” he emphasized.
UN Special Coordinator Joanna Wronecka expressed the United Nations’ keenness on supporting the Taif Agreement.
Former MP Boutros Harb pointed out that it was easy to criticize Taif, but it was not easy what Lebanon was suffering from at that time in terms of killing and bombing.
