Nadim Gemayel Calls for Firm State Action on Arms, Slams Lack of Transparency

MP Nadim Gemayel on Tuesday called for a decisive stance by state institutions to reassert control over all weapons in the country, insisting that arms must be exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese state.

Speaking to MTV ahead of a parliamentary session convened to question the government over its recent decisions and policies, Gemayel stressed the urgent need for institutional clarity and authority, demanding a "firm decision by the state’s institutions to place all weapons under their control.”

He also criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the Lebanese government's recent interactions with U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, who visited Beirut for discussions related to Hezbollah’s disarmament and regional tensions.

“We still don’t know what responses were given to Tom Barrack during his last visit,” Gemayel said. “This lack of clarity undermines institutional credibility. Institutions cannot function properly under such conditions, and this approach cannot continue.”

Speaking in a separate interview with Al Jadeed TV, the Kataeb lawmaker underscored the need for political coherence and commitment to state-building.

“No one can be inside the government and outside it at the same time,” he said. “A decisive choice must be made regarding the direction of the state and the process of rebuilding it.”
