Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi is preparing to convene an urgent spiritual summit aimed at uniting the leaders of Lebanon’s religious sects, Al-Markaziya news agency reported on Friday.
The summit, which will be held at the patriarchal seat in Bkerke, is seen as a significant move to address the critical challenges facing the country, including the ongoing war and the protracted presidential vacuum.
According to sources familiar with the matter, preparations for the summit are progressing smoothly, with all major parties agreeing to participate. Notably, the Shiite leadership, which had previously expressed reservations, has now confirmed its attendance.
Patriarch Al-Rahi himself is reportedly overseeing the preparations, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The sources emphasized that given Lebanon's dire political and security circumstances, this spiritual summit is seen as a necessary step toward halting the conflict and advancing the stalled presidential election process.
Unlike typical high-level gatherings, the summit is being organized directly by the heads of the sects themselves, without the formation of a logistical committee and without formal invitations. Instead, the spiritual leaders are personally coordinating with one another given the gravity of the current crisis.
The summit, expected to be held soon, has raised hopes that the religious leadership can play a pivotal role in steering Lebanon toward peace and political stability.
