In light of the growing humanitarian disaster across southern Lebanon, Baalbek, and the southern suburbs of Beirut, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi on Wednesday issued a heartfelt appeal for urgent action, highlighting the need for both local and international responses to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the ongoing conflict. 

Patriarch Al-Rahi began by expressing deep gratitude to the Lebanese people, particularly those in safer areas, for their generosity in opening their homes to the displaced.

“Our thanks to all those in safe areas who are welcoming our afflicted people into their homes,” he said, praising the unity shown by the Lebanese community in the face of adversity.

In addition, the patriarch commended public and private schools that have opened their doors to shelter those who have been displaced by the conflict, also expressing his appreciation to humanitarian organizations working tirelessly to provide essential supplies, including food, medicine, and basic household necessities, to those in need.

Hospitals and healthcare workers also received praise for their critical role in caring for the injured, as did the Ministry of Public Health and other government ministries that are contributing to relief efforts.

However, the patriarch did not stop at words of gratitude. He issued a stark call for the immediate cessation of hostilities, urging all parties involved in the conflict to halt the violence to prevent further casualties and displacement.

"We call upon all concerned parties to cease fire immediately to avoid further casualties, injuries, and homelessness," he said.

Al-Rahi also turned to the international community, urging the United Nations and the Security Council to intervene decisively. He called on them to compel all parties to stop the fighting and begin negotiations toward a peaceful resolution. His appeal further addressed Lebanon’s ongoing political vacuum, stressing the urgent need for the election of a President to steer the nation through these turbulent times.

"We urge the Parliament to elect a President for the Republic, as his presence at the head of the country is urgently needed."

Patriarch Al-Rahi concluded his appeal with a prayer, asking for divine guidance to help all parties find a path toward a just and comprehensive peace as Lebanon is facing another chapter of turmoil.
