The Maronite Bishops called on Lebanese parliamentarians to show a strong sense of national responsibility by electing a president who will unite the Lebanese people and restore Lebanon's vital role in the Middle East. They emphasized the importance of electing a president capable of promoting national unity, solidarity, and necessary reforms.
In a statement issued after their monthly meeting at the Patriarchal See in Bkerke, the bishops urged the committee responsible for overseeing the ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon to remain vigilant in ensuring both sides fully comply with the terms of the agreement. They also called for the complete implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The bishops expressed that now is the right moment for a national dialogue on Lebanon's potential path toward positive neutrality. They argued that adopting such a policy would protect Lebanon from the harmful impacts of regional conflicts, leading the country towards a more stable and fruitful national life.
Regarding the situation in Syria, the bishops expressed their hope that the country would be rebuilt on the values of unity, freedom, justice, and respect for all its communities. They also extended their wishes for success in Syria’s reconstruction efforts and the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.
In conclusion, the bishops sent their heartfelt greetings to all Lebanese, both in Lebanon and abroad, on the occasion of Christmas and the New Year. They prayed for God's blessings on the people of Lebanon and the world, asking for enlightenment for the country's leaders and a spark of mercy and love in their hearts. They called for an end to all wars and the establishment of justice and peace in Lebanon, the region, and across the globe.
