The Council of Maronite Bishops commended President Joseph Aoun’s visit to Riyadh, expressing hope that it would pave the way for further official engagements beneficial to both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued following their monthly meeting at the Maronite Patriarchate in Bkerke, the bishops also welcomed Aoun’s participation in the Arab Summit in Cairo, describing it as a step toward restoring Arab solidarity with Lebanon. They emphasized that such support is crucial for Lebanon’s recovery on multiple fronts and aligns with the political vision of the new era, which prioritizes state-building and equality among citizens under the constitution and the rule of law.
The bishops also praised Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s initiative in visiting the conflict-stricken South, where he reiterated Lebanon’s appeal to the United States, France, the United Nations, and the UN Security Council to help end the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territories. They stressed that restoring security and stability in the border region would facilitate reconstruction efforts and foster economic growth and prosperity.
Furthermore, the bishops urged the government to accelerate reforms and ensure their implementation with the necessary seriousness and accountability. They highlighted the importance of revitalizing economic and financial activity, particularly through long-awaited investment initiatives.
Addressing the upcoming municipal, mayoral, and parliamentary elections, the bishops called on authorities to ensure proper preparations, underscoring the need for fair representation that genuinely reflects Lebanon’s social fabric rather than perpetuating sectarian and partisan power-sharing among political leaders.
The bishops concluded by reaffirming their commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, stability, and institutional integrity, calling on all stakeholders to act responsibly in guiding the country through its ongoing challenges.
