French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prioritize the protection of civilians in Lebanon, the Élysée Palace said in a statement on Monday.
During a phone conversation between the two leaders, Macron told Netanyahu that the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Yehya Sinwar should serve as an opportunity to initiate a new phase of negotiations for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
In the wake of escalating violence, Macron renewed his call for a ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, condemning recent Israeli attacks on sites belonging to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He also expressed regret over the increasing public criticism exchanged between the French and Israeli governments in recent weeks.
In a show of solidarity, Macron expressed his support for Netanyahu following a recent drone attack that targeted the Prime Minister's residence.
