Lebanon’s Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation, Jamal Al-Hajjar, has lifted the travel ban on Judge Tarek Bitar, LBCI reported, allowing him to travel to Bulgaria to question the owner of the Rhosus ship, who is currently in custody there.

A Bulgarian court has denied Lebanon’s request to extradite the owner of the ship linked to the 2020 Beirut port explosion, but approved a key judicial step that allows Lebanon’s lead investigator, Judge Tarek Bitar, to question the suspect on Bulgarian soil, according to information obtained by Voice of Lebanon.

Pope Leo XIV visited Lebanon this week, the third visit by a supreme pontiff to the country since John Paul II in 1997 and Benedict in 2012 (Pope Paul VI stopped very briefly in 1964, on his way to India). The fact that Lebanon is the site of the Pope’s first foreign visit (with Turkey) is significant. The country holds the highest percentage of Christians in the Arab world.

Former lawmaker Samer Saade on Tuesday slammed the remarks made by Foreign Minister Charbel wehbe stating that the Gulf countries are the ones founding the Islamic State, deeming his statement as an insult for all the Lebanese people.
“The official spokesperson for Lebanon's Foreign Relations, or what was known as the Lebanese diplomacy, cared about admiring his patrons at the expense of the interest of Lebanon and the Lebanese,” Saade wrote on Twitter.
“This is the era of the Lebanese humiliation,” he said.
“The series of destroying and isolating Lebanon continues,” he added.
