Hariri, Rifi Meet for First Time Since Standoff

Prime Minister Saad Hariri and former Minister Ashraf Rifi met on Tuesday night for the first time since ties between the two men had been severed three years ago.

The meeting was held at the residence of former PM Fouad Siniora.

Following the talks, Siniora announced that Rifi will not run for Tripoli's upcoming by-elections, and that he will instead back Future Movement candidate Dima Jamali.

"A new page was turned today," Hariri said. "We have to close ranks and work to pull Tripoli out of poverty."

"The primary concern for Rifi and me, as well as for former PM Najib Mikati and former Minister Mohammad Safadi, is the development of Tripoli," Hariri stressed.

The relation between Hariri and Rifi soured over a number of issues in 2016, leading the latter to resign from his post as justice minister in a government headed by the Future Movement leader.
