Legal Obstacles to Deport 1,800 Syrian Prisoners in Lebanon

Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that "1800 Syrians who committed criminal offenses are detained in Lebanese prisons, 82% of whom have not completed their trials. Meanwhile, the government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati has developed a plan to deport them. Caretaker Minister of Justice Henry Khoury has been tasked with exploring the possibility of immediately handing over the detainees and convicts to the Syrian state, taking into account the relevant laws and agreements."

In this context, Minister Khoury pointed out that "the issue of deporting Syrian prisoners in Lebanon to their country is a sensitive matter that cannot be addressed by a hasty decision."

He also revealed that "a ministerial and technical delegation will visit Syria to discuss the return of displaced Syrians, but the issue of the convicts and detainees remains under deep study."
