Lebanon’s Top Leaders Condemn Israeli Strikes as Breach of Sovereignty and UN Resolution

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issued strong condemnations Thursday evening following renewed Israeli military strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, describing the attacks as blatant violations of international law and Lebanese sovereignty.

In a statement, President Aoun denounced the aggression as a flagrant breach of the ceasefire agreement as well as clear violations of United Nations and humanitarian laws and resolutions. He emphasized the timing of the attacks, on the eve of a sacred religious occasion (Al-Adha), as a deliberate affront to regional stability and efforts toward a just peace.

“This brazen violation, delivered through Beirut’s mailbox and the blood of innocent civilians, is aimed at sending a direct message to the United States and its policies,” Aoun said.

“Lebanon will never submit to this,” he concluded.

Prime Minister Salam echoed the president's concerns in a separate statement, condemning the repeated Israeli threats and attacks, especially those targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut. He described the assaults as “a deliberate and systematic targeting of Lebanon, its security, stability, and economy, particularly as the country approaches the holiday season and its peak tourist period.”

Salam underscored that these strikes constitute “a flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701,” which calls for a cessation of hostilities and respect for Lebanon’s territorial integrity. He urged the international community to step up by deterring Israel from continuing its attacks, demanding an end to the attacks and a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
