Lebanon and Spain issued a joint call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Lebanon, urging full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
"This implies reestablishing the sovereignty of Lebanon throughout its territories and ensure the return to their homes of displaced on both sides of the Blue Line," read a joint statement issued following talks between Lebanon's caretaker Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
Both nations condemned recent attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese Armed Forces. They also decried violence targeting medical personnel, health facilities, journalists, and civilians, calling for strict adherence to International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Conventions.
Spain and Lebanon pledged cooperation toward stabilizing southern Lebanon and fostering long-term peace in the region as the Spanish government reaffirmed its commitment to alleviate the serious humanitarian crisis in the country and to support the stabilization phase. So far in 2024, Spain has provided nearly 5.5 million euros in humanitarian assistance and over 12 tons of essential medicines and blankets for vulnerable Lebanese communities.
