Kataeb Warns of National Breakdown if Illegal Arms Remain Outside State Control

The Kataeb's political bureau held its weekly meeting, chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel. Following discussions on the latest developments, the bureau issued the following statement:

1. The Kataeb political bureau calls on all political forces to safeguard Lebanon’s constitutional institutions and warns of the serious consequences of failing to contain all illegal weapons, without exception, or to assert the state’s full and undivided authority across the entire Lebanese territory. The bureau cautions that continued failure in this regard could jeopardize national unity, fuel extremism, and derail the institutional recovery process.

In this context, the party urges Lebanon’s legitimate armed forces to tighten control over the country’s borders, maintain internal security, and enforce the rule of law equally across all regions and communities.

The Kataeb Party also renews its call for Hezbollah to seize the current moment and immediately hand over its weapons, without conditions, in order to return to the state's fold and engage seriously in a national project aimed at rebuilding Lebanon’s institutions in line with the Constitution.

This project, needed today more than ever before, has been at the heart of the Kataeb's vision for nearly ninety years: a pluralistic state that upholds human freedom and dignity, regardless of sectarian or religious affiliation, through sovereign institutions.

Kataeb stresses the need to complete and safeguard this national project by asserting the state’s exclusive authority across all territories. This would lay the groundwork for launching a broad national reconciliation process, a historical reckoning, and an inclusive dialogue on ways to develop Lebanon’s political system toward greater balance and long-term stability.

2. In light of the recent deadly developments in Syria, the political bureau expresses deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and extends its condolences to the victims’ families. The party underscores the need to shield Lebanon from the spillover effects of these alarming sectarian events, which serve as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting internal stability and reinforcing the authority of the state, as outlined above.

3. The political bureau reaffirms its unwavering position that Lebanese citizens living abroad must be granted the right to vote for all 128 members of Parliament, not be limited to just six seats. The party calls on the relevant parliamentary subcommittee, stemming from the joint committees, to resolve this issue without delay and to refer the necessary amendments to the full legislature before time runs out. It emphasizes the importance of preserving the right of the Lebanese diaspora to fully participate in national political life.

4. On the legislative front, the political bureau urges the Administration and Justice Committee to accelerate its deliberations on the draft law ensuring judicial independence, in preparation for its adoption by the general assembly. Kataeb stresses that this legislation is a cornerstone of the broader reform process, critical to restoring international confidence in Lebanon and unlocking the foreign aid earmarked for reconstruction and economic recovery.
