The Kataeb’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of Party President Samy Gemayel. After discussing recent political and social developments, the bureau issued the following statement:
1. The Political Bureau commends the steadfast stance of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, who are striving to uphold the sovereignty of the Lebanese state across its entire territory and resisting escalating pressures that employ all forms of intimidation, including sectarian threats and street mobilization.
The Political Bureau rejects attempts by Hezbollah’s Secretary-General to lecture the Lebanese people on sovereignty while taking directives from Tehran. It affirms that true national sovereignty can only be achieved through the authority of the Lebanese people, represented by their duly elected constitutional institutions, across the entire territory of the country. This requires the State to hold exclusive control over arms and decisions of war and peace, after which all other arrangements can be discussed.
The Political Bureau warns against any future attempts to exploit the streets against the State and the army, emphasizing that the military and security forces are performing their duties in accordance with the Constitution and the law. It considers such tactics as aimed solely at undermining State authority and weakening its institutions.
The Bureau also condemns the ongoing campaign by the March 8 Alliance against its opponents, which seeks to intimidate and accuse members of its own sect, particularly independent journalists, who call for a return to State authority and the rule of law.
2. The Bureau underscores the need to continue advancing Lebanese–Syrian ties, beginning with the demarcation of the border and ratification of a prisoner transfer agreement, provided it excludes individuals convicted of terrorism or murder. This approach should ensure balanced and transparent relations based on mutual respect for each country’s sovereignty.
3. The Bureau stresses that addressing Lebanon’s financial and economic crisis should not rely on raising taxes on citizens, but on improving management of State assets, enforcing strict measures against tax and customs evasion, and curbing smuggling through illegal crossings. These measures would increase State revenues and enable better conditions for public employees and the military.
The Political Bureau also calls for the swift completion of a comprehensive survey of human resources and capabilities within the Lebanese administration, as a preliminary step toward genuine reform that restores its effectiveness and role.
