Kataeb Party Warns Lebanon Faces ‘Last Opportunity’ to Avoid Deeper Isolation

The Kataeb's Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of party leader Samy Gemayel. After discussing the country’s overall situation in light of recent political and economic developments, particularly the ongoing Syrian displacement crisis and the progress of financial reforms, the Bureau issued the following statement:

1- Lebanon now stands at the edge of its last opportunity that could determine its future. This critical moment must not be missed; otherwise, the country risks sinking deeper into the quagmire of regional and international marginalization and exclusion.

The presence of non-state armed groups, whether Hezbollah or all Palestinian factions inside and outside refugee camps, are unacceptable. is no longer acceptable. Sovereignty is not a demand imposed from abroad but rather an urgent national necessity essential to preserving Lebanon’s entity and stability.

The Bureau condemns the systematic attacks by certain religious authorities against the government over the issue of disarmament, as well as the ongoing escalation surrounding it. Political blackmail and threats aimed at igniting sectarian strife and undermining civil peace are wholly unacceptable. No one wants Lebanon to be dragged into a civil war, and it is time to stop exaggerations that threaten national security.

The Political Bureau stresses that the trust and responsibility now rest squarely on the shoulders of President Joseph Aoun to swiftly bring the disarmament issue to a conclusion, in the best interests of Lebanon and its people.

It also commends the Lebanese Army’s role in enforcing international resolutions and calls on all parties to support this national mission to safeguard state sovereignty and promote security and stability across the country.

2- The Kataeb Party underscores the critical importance of the reform path initiated by the government and urges it to take bolder steps forward, without yielding to any political blackmail or ambiguous compromises, especially regarding the restoration of order in the banking sector and the elimination of the cash-based economy that keeps Lebanon isolated from the global financial system and undermines its economic and financial relations.

In this context, the Political Bureau calls for intensified official efforts to remove Lebanon from the FATF's grey list and to facilitate financial transactions as a fundamental step to break the siege and restore both domestic and international confidence in Lebanese institutions.

3- The Kataeb Party renews its warning over the ongoing Syrian displacement crisis and its profound impact on Lebanon’s national identity, internal balance, as well as economic and social stability.

After more than twelve years, the pretexts used to justify this situation no longer hold: firstly, the  Assad regime has fallen and the new regime is part of regional settlements; and secondly, international sanctions on Syria have been lifted, removing any justification for the impossibility of return.

Accordingly, the party calls on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to reconsider its policies, acknowledge that conditions for return are now safe and available, stop exploiting certain security concerns in Syria to justify continued displacement, and reject treating the displaced Syrians' presence as a permanent reality and fait accompli.
