Kataeb Party Rejects Infringement of Freedoms, Affirms Its Keeeness to Respect Rule of Conduct of Legal Profession

In light of the dimensions of the decision made by the Beirut Bar Association related to amending some articles of the Code of Conduct, the Kataeb Party issued the following statement:

1- The Kataeb Party decided to distance itself from trade union issues, which it considered internal ones to be settled at the table of the union council and in general assemblies, in a bid to preserve the independence of trade union work and distance politics from it.

It stated that its historical position was embodied with all the captains and Kataeb members of the Syndicate Council.

2- The Kataeb Party absolutely rejected the infringement of public, personal and media freedoms, which in its constitution is an existential issue, such as its keenness to respect the foundations of practicing the legal profession and its rules of conduct.

As for the fact that the union’s decision is no longer a pure union decision, but has turned into a matter of public opinion, the Kataeb Party calls on the President of the Bar Association and gentlemen of the members of the Bar Council who are keen on preserving and defending freedoms to freeze the controversial decision pending the opening of an urgent union dialogue with all concerned parties.

It also expressed its readiness to facilitate such a dialogue, including the good, the interest and the legacy of the Freedoms Association, the Bar Association.

In this context, the Kataeb Party had previously called in the name of its Vice President, Captain George Jreij, to deal with this file in a way that guarantees public and personal freedoms and does not prejudice the general union interest, in his lecture at the Bar Association on April 4, 2023, in the presence of the President of the Bar and members of the Bar Council.
