Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel warned that Lebanon is entering a critical period that will test both the state and Hezbollah, emphasizing that extending the Lebanese Army’s authority nationwide is essential to prevent a new war and pave the way for stability.
Gemayel made the remarks following a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa at Kataeb headquarters in Saifi, where they discussed recent developments in Lebanon and the broader region.
The meeting was attended by MPs Elias Hankach and Nadim Gemayel, as well as Marwan Abdallah, head of the Kataeb Party’s Foreign Affairs Department.
Gemayel began by congratulating the new ambassador on his appointment, wishing him success in what he described as a “pivotal mission at a critical time.” He added that the ambassador’s presence comes at a defining moment, requiring a “historic role.”
“We were very reassured by his character and his ability to understand all aspects of the crisis, and we have high hopes that he will play a central role in the period ahead,” Gemayel said, stressing that “the absolute priority is to spare Lebanon a new war.”
He underscored that “the only way to protect Lebanon and prevent a repeat of past tragedies is to extend the authority of the Lebanese Army across the entire country. Every area where the army is present is secure, while any area outside state control is exposed to danger, particularly in the south.”
Gemayel called for the army to move immediately to areas north of the Litani River once the current phase of its plan is completed.
“The area south of the Litani is now free of weapons, and this should be officially announced soon so that residents feel secure and are no longer exposed to shelling or other threats,” he said.
Describing the period ahead as a “dual test,” Gemayel said: “The first test is for Hezbollah, which bears responsibility for delaying Lebanon’s transition to a new phase, obstructing the army’s work, and hindering international support and reconstruction efforts.”
“The second test is for the Lebanese State, which must demonstrate its seriousness by enabling the army to complete its mission north of the Litani, thereby extending its authority across the entire country,” he added.
Gemayel concluded by expressing hope for a year of stability and internal peace.
“We hope 2026 will be a year of reassurance and a fresh chapter in Lebanon’s history, full of hope and economic revival that will bring our youth back from abroad,” he said. “God protect Lebanon and all Lebanese.”
