Lebanon Cannot Afford to Wait to Disarm Hezbollah

Israel Withdraws Golani Reconnaissance Unit After 50 Days of Operations in South Lebanon
The Israeli military said Wednesday it had withdrawn a reconnaissance unit from the Golani Brigade from the area of Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon after about 50 days of operations, even as Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces were preparing for a long-term presence in what he described as security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.
The military said the Golani reconnaissance unit had completed its mission in the Beaufort Castle area after 50 days of operations. The unit had been deployed as part of an Israeli ground operation launched in late May around the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Saluki area, where Israeli forces said they were seeking to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure and establish operational control over the strategic ridge.
The area around Beaufort Castle, also known as Qalaat al-Shakif, is strategically important because of its commanding views over the Litani River, southern Lebanon and northern Israel. The Golani reconnaissance unit was among the Israeli forces that captured the castle and raised the brigade's flag there in May, in what Israel described as part of efforts to expand its forward defense line and remove threats to communities near its northern border.
The unit's withdrawal does not appear to signal a broader Israeli pullback from the area. Israeli forces have continued to operate in southern Lebanon, while the military has maintained that the Beaufort area forms part of a security zone intended to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its military infrastructure close to the border.
Katz visited Israeli troops in southern Lebanon on Wednesday and reiterated that Israel would not withdraw from the security zone.
“I have instructed the IDF to take all necessary steps to prepare for a long-term presence in the security zone in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza,” Katz said.
“We are destroying Hezbollah infrastructure and all the homes in the security zone, and we will not allow our citizens to be threatened,” he added. “We destroyed the tunnels they built with Iranian support to invade the Galilee.”
