Israeli Strikes and Artillery Fire Hit South Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

Israeli artillery struck the town of Khiyam on Friday despite a ceasefire announced the previous night, as five shells reportedly landed in the area.

The incident came as an Israeli reconnaissance drone continued flying at low altitude over the western slopes of Mount Hermon and the southern sector of the Rashaya district from early morning hours.

On the ground, rescue teams recovered 13 bodies from the aftermath of overnight strikes, along with 35 wounded and survivors. Around 15 others remain missing under the rubble following an Israeli airstrike on the city of Tyre, according to rescue sources.

In a separate development, the Israeli military fired artillery shells and heavy machine-gun rounds toward a medical convoy from the Islamic Health Authority in Kunin, leaving several people injured.

The Israeli army also carried out a large-scale demolition operation in the town of Khiyam, further adding to the destruction in the border region.

Elsewhere, a landmine explosion in the southern town of Majdal Selm killed one person and seriously wounded another. The two men were reported to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Lebanese army engineering units worked to reopen the Qasmiyeh road in the Tyre district after it had been blocked, allowing dozens of vehicles to pass toward villages south of the Litani River. Soldiers were also deployed to manage traffic flow across the Qasmiyeh bridge.

Military bulldozers worked to clear and level the surrounding area, filling craters to widen the road and facilitate the return of displaced residents to their villages.

Separately, teams from the National Litani River Authority reopened the road linking Qasmiyeh to Burj Rahhal in the Tyre district. The Lebanese army, in coordination with the Islamic Message Scouts Association’s civil defense units, also reopened the bridge in the town of Tayr Falsay.

Earlier, just before the truce came into effect, Israeli forces shelled the town of Deir Mimas with several artillery rounds, one of which struck a residential home and sparked a fire.

Civil Defense teams from the Qlayaa center rushed to the scene and managed to contain the blaze. Authorities said the damage was limited to material losses, with no casualties reported.

The Lebanese Red Cross said in a post on X that “severe material damage” occurred following an Israeli airstrike near its Tebnine center in the Bint Jbeil district. The facility houses a regional operations room, an ambulance and emergency center, and a disaster management unit, it said, noting the strike took place at dawn on Thursday.
