An Israeli attack killed a Lebanese soldier and wounded others at an army checkpoint in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese military said on Monday.

“The Israeli strike targeted an army checkpoint near Tyre, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to others,” the military said in a statement.

A military source told AFP that the assault marked the first direct targeting of a Lebanese Army position since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict.

The strike hit the Al-Amariya area near Al-Mansouri, the final army post in the western sector after troops withdrew from border positions. According to sources, Israeli forces fired three artillery shells toward the entrance of the Al-Amariya–Naqoura barracks.

The Lebanese Army command confirmed that the checkpoint on the Qlayleh–Tyre road in Al-Amariya was struck, killing Army Sergeant Ali Ajam, a native of Mishta Hamoud in the northern Akkar region. Several other soldiers were reported injured.
