Israel has intensified its military operations in Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of attempting to reconstitute its capabilities in violation of the cease-fire agreement, according to Israeli and U.S. officials.
Two Israeli security officials, speaking to The New York Times on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said Israel considers Hezbollah’s recent activities, ranging from rebuilding infrastructure to weapons smuggling and renewed training, as breaches of the cessation of hostilities.
“Some of our enemies are trying to rebuild themselves to attack us again. And as we say, we’re on it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this month.
The Israeli military claims that Hezbollah continues to operate military facilities, transport weapons, and conduct drills in southern Lebanon, all of which it deems violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war.
