Israeli military Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir warned Hezbollah on Wednesday that any attempt to rebuild its military capabilities or establish infrastructure in southern Lebanon would be met with an immediate and forceful response, as he visited Israeli forces along the northern border.
“We will not allow Hezbollah to establish terrorist infrastructure in the area. Any attempt by the enemy to entrench itself, build up its capabilities or threaten communities in northern Israel will be met immediately and forcefully,” Zamir said during a visit to the Northern Command and the 91st Division, according to remarks released by the military.
The warning came after an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, the first in several weeks. The Israeli military said it had targeted two people in the town of Qabrikha who were allegedly observing its troops. The town lies outside the Israeli military's buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
The military said the strike was intended to eliminate a threat to its forces. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said one person was killed and another wounded.
Addressing the security situation along the border, Zamir described the 91st Division as the forward line of defense for residents of northern Israel.
“The 91st Division serves as the forward defense line for northern residents and is advancing a forward defense posture in front of their communities,” he said. “The operational reality is constantly changing, but our commitment remains the same: to establish strong border defenses and ensure the security of northern residents.”
Zamir also accused Hezbollah of serving Iran's interests at the expense of Lebanon and its population.
“Throughout the war, Hezbollah has once again proven that it is an Iranian proxy, not a Lebanese patriot. Its actions have harmed the interests of the Lebanese state and its citizens,” he said.
The Israeli army chief said the military remained on alert for developments across the region and was prepared to strike any adversary that threatened Israel.
“The IDF remains alert to developments in both nearby and distant arenas and is prepared to strike any enemy that attempts to harm us, as we have done in the past,” he said.
He added that the Northern Command had significantly weakened Hezbollah during three years of fighting, warning that Israel could expand its military gains if necessary.
“Throughout three years of fighting, the Northern Command has engaged Hezbollah, struck the organization and degraded many of its capabilities. If required, we will know how to build on those achievements,” Zamir said.
