Israeli Army: 20 Senior Iranian Officers Killed Since Start of Operation

Israel’s military announced Saturday it has eliminated Iran’s highest‑ranking intelligence officer and the commander who oversaw the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ long‑range missile arsenal, part of a rapid series of strikes that the Israeli army claims have decimated Tehran’s senior command.

According to an Israeli army briefing, roughly 20 senior Iranian officers have been killed since Israel launched an operation against Iran in the early hours of Friday.

The military said Gholam‑Reza Marhabi, described as head of the Iranian Armed Forces’ intelligence directorate and the country’s most senior intelligence figure, died in Israel’s opening wave of airstrikes on Friday morning.

Marhabi “was responsible for nationwide situational assessments and played a central role in planning and preparing combat operations targeting Israel over the past year,” the military said.

He was reportedly a close confidant of General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s armed‑forces chief of staff, who was also killed in the same barrage, according to Israel.

In a separate strike Friday, Israel said it targeted an underground command post where Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri (no relation to the chief of staff) was meeting senior officers from the IRGC Aerospace Force.

The younger Bagheri led the Guards’ surface‑to‑surface missile division and “oversaw the bulk of Iran’s long‑range ballistic and cruise‑missile capabilities,” the Israeli army said.

Israeli officials allege the gathering was assembling plans for a fresh strike on Israeli territory when the bunker was hit, killing Bagheri, the IRGC air‑force commander and several other high‑ranking officers.

Moreover, Iran’s semi‑official Tasnim news agency confirmed on Saturday that two members of the Revolutionary Guards were killed when an Israeli missile struck the Zarandiyeh Basij base in central Iran earlier in the day.

“Following the brutal attack by the Zionist regime on the Zarandiyeh Basij base, two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were martyred,” the news agency said, citing the Guards.

Later, Iranian state media reported that Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died of wounds sustained in Israel’s first wave of airstrikes.
