Israel is dissatisfied with the Lebanese army’s progress in dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in pilot areas of southern Lebanon, according to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, citing a senior U.S. official.

The pilot zones, established as a test case for a wider process aimed at removing Hezbollah’s weapons and infrastructure from areas near the Israeli border, have been in operation for about six weeks. But Israeli officials consider the results achieved so far inadequate, Kan reported.

According to Kan, the senior U.S. official said some Lebanese army officers were themselves opposed to an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon at this stage. Their concern, the official said, is that Hezbollah could move back into areas from which its forces and infrastructure have been removed once Israeli troops pull out.

“We are working with both sides to reach a future arrangement, but it will take time,” the U.S. official said.
