Israel’s military carried out a large explosion in the southern Lebanese town of al-Mansouri on Monday after an operation there in which it said it dismantled more than 600 sites belonging to Hezbollah, including eight underground routes.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that a “massive explosion” had rocked al-Mansouri, in the Tyre district, saying it was carried out by Israeli forces. The sound was heard in Tyre and several surrounding villages.

The Israeli military said its forces had completed a large-scale operation in the area aimed at preventing Hezbollah from rebuilding its military presence inside what Israel calls its “security zone” in southern Lebanon.

The operation was carried out by troops from the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade, operating under the 91st Division, together with the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, the military said.

According to the Israeli military, troops dismantled more than 600 sites it identified as Hezbollah infrastructure and eight underground routes. One of the routes was found inside a civilian home, it said.

The military also said troops located dozens of rocket launchers that had been left in the area before the ceasefire took effect.

Israel said the operation was intended to remove threats to Israeli civilians and troops and prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing itself in the area. It said its forces would continue operating there while maintaining its commitment to the ceasefire agreement.

Lebanese authorities have accused Israel of systematically destroying villages in the south, including homes, schools, places of worship and water and electricity infrastructure.

Al-Mansouri lies about 9 kilometers south of Tyre and roughly 10 kilometers from the Israeli border. The town and surrounding areas have come under repeated Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire in recent weeks despite a ceasefire that took effect in June.

During the truce, the municipality told residents they could return home but urged them to avoid areas that had fallen inside Israel’s self-declared security zone.

Last month, however, the Israeli military ordered residents to evacuate before fully occupying the town. Israeli forces have since carried out repeated demolitions and detonations there, which residents in the Tyre area have been able to see, according to AFP correspondents.
