The Centrist Democrat International (IDC-CDI) has voiced deep concern over recent developments in Lebanon, warning that unilateral actions by Hezbollah are dragging the country into a dangerous regional conflict and putting Lebanese civilians at risk.
In a statement issued on Friday, the IDC-CDI condemned what it described as “the unilateral action undertaken by terrorist organisation Hezbollah on 1 March 2026, involving the launch of six missiles from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel.” The group said such actions constitute “an irresponsible escalation” and “represent a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and of the exclusive prerogative of the Lebanese state to exercise authority over decisions relating to national security.”
“These actions place Lebanese civilians at significant risk and threaten to draw Lebanon into a broader regional confrontation with potentially grave consequences,” the IDC-CDI added.
The group welcomed a recent decision by Lebanon’s Council of Ministers to prohibit military and security activities conducted outside state authority. The IDC-CDI described the move as “an important step toward strengthening state institutions and reinforcing the rule of law,” emphasizing that “the government of Lebanon alone bears responsibility for decisions relating to national defense and security.”
Expressing solidarity with the Lebanese people and democratic forces in the country, including its member party Kataeb, the IDC-CDI reiterated support for “efforts to promote stability, safeguard national sovereignty, and uphold accountable and democratic governance.”
The statement also called for heightened international diplomatic engagement to address the sources of instability in Lebanon and the wider region. It urged “strengthened international measures, including targeted sanctions against the Iranian regime and Hezbollah, aimed at curbing activities that contribute to regional destabilization,” and encouraged “intensified cooperation in identifying and dismantling illicit financial networks linked to Hezbollah and associated actors.”
Finally, the IDC-CDI highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, stressing the importance of aid to displaced families and affected communities. The organization concluded by reaffirming its commitment to “supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty, democratic institutions, and the legitimate aspirations of the Lebanese people for peace, stability, and security.”
