A French initiative calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon, which included Hezbollah surrendering its weapons and the Lebanese Army taking control of Beirut’s southern suburbs, has reportedly been rejected by the militant group, sources told Al-Hadath and Al Jadeed.
Sources said Tel Aviv has set a deadline until the end of the week for a response to the proposal, warning that failure to comply could prompt a wider scope of military operations.
According to the reports, the proposal would have required Hezbollah to hand over its arms within two weeks and for Lebanon to declare its readiness to engage in direct peace negotiations with Israel.
Sources close to Hezbollah, however, said the group refuses any third-party negotiations.
“The situation on the ground now decides the outcome, and we reject any proposals for negotiations,” a source told Al-Hadath. “Any attempt to raid our weapons depots will be treated as an Israeli attack.”
French diplomatic sources said President Emmanuel Macron contacted Speaker Nabih Berri, urging Hezbollah to stop rocket fire. Berri reportedly replied that any ceasefire must be mutual and that both sides would need to commit for an agreement to hold.
U.S. diplomatic sources told Al Jadeed that a lasting resolution to the conflict is impossible without Hezbollah’s full surrender, the handover of its weapons, and the group’s transformation into a political party.
Meanwhile, military sources said Lebanese Army personnel responsible for the southern Litani sector remain stationed at the sector headquarters in the Benoit Barakat Barracks in Tyre under the command of Brig. Gen. Nikolas Tabet, keeping a high level of readiness amid escalating tensions.
